Founded in 1983 by Alice Ross Carey, Carey & Co. has grown to be a prominent architectural and preservation firm with an extensive portfolio of notable projects in the western United States. Our philosophy of practice is rooted in the belief that the preservation of history and place is a key contributor to enriching, educating and revitalizing our communities. Through our work, we aspire to cultivate and foster knowledge and an understanding of our architectural heritage for present and future generations.
Our talented staff comprises architects, historians, conservators and planners who provide clients with exceptional professional services for the rehabilitation and reuse of existing structures in the project sectors of civic, commercial, educational, recreational, residential and places of worship. We work in partnership with our clients to envision and design new life for their historic properties — from the rehabilitation of large civic structures to small vernacular buildings. Likewise, our expertise in preparing cultural and architectural resource studies, historic structure reports, architectural surveys and incentive programs enables our clients to strategically plan for the future.
Our firm has received over 50 awards at the national, state and local level from such organizations as the National Trust for Historic Preservation, National Endowment for the Arts, American Institute of Architects, California Office of Historic Preservation, California Preservation Foundation, Art Deco Society of California, San Francisco Heritage and the Berkeley Architectural Heritage Association.
