Located 60 miles north of Las Vegas in the Nevada desert, the Nevada Test Site (now the Nevada National Security Site) covers 1,400 square miles, roughly the size of Rhode Island. Since 1951, the facility has served as the nation’s primary continental testing facility for nuclear weapons. Despite its overall desolation, it contains thousands of structures, ranging from Quonset huts and trailers to ramjet propulsion development facilities and mysterious towers. Beginning in 1991, Carey & Co. has completed multiple projects at the site including an overall historic structures survey, historical evaluations of numerous individual structures and building complexes, and construction documents for the stabilization of several structures including the Apple 2 site.
