Oakland City Hall

Oakland, CA
Civic | HSR

Built in 1911, this majestic Beaux Arts Style building designed by Palmer & Hornboster is considered the first government building designed as a skyscraper. Severely damaged in the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, Carey & Co. served as the preservation architect. Our scope included the preparation of a Historic Structure Report; conservation of terra cotta, Caen stone and ornamental plaster, marble, and bronze; and the restoration of the Mayor’s office and conference room, “modernized” in the 1960s. Carey & Co. also advised the team on conformance with the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation.
