War Memorial Opera House

Civic | HSR

The Opera House was designed by Arthur Brown Jr., the noted architect who also designed San Francisco City Hall and the Veteran’s Building; and G. Albert Lansburgh, a noted theater designer. The Beaux Arts structure, along with its sibling, the War Memorial Veteran’s Building, was completed in 1932. Carey & Co. served as the historical architect, first completing a historic structure report, and then handling project scope related to conservation of historic features including stone, terra cotta, ornamental plaster, cast stone, and decorative finishes. We also provided design direction for the restoration of the historic ceiling, installation of new lighting, and restoration of historic and design of new restrooms.
